What should you ask yourself before you get a divorce?

Before you get a divorce, there are a few things you should ask yourself. Just like when you were getting married, answering some questions before jumping into a new situation can be of assistance.

First, before you ever get a divorce, you should ask yourself if you've really taken the time to talk things through with your spouse. Divorce is usually permanent and does often cost thousands of dollars. There is research that shows that only 30 to 35 percent of what you say is really heard by your partner, so it's important to make sure that he or she really understands and hears what you want to change about your relationship.

Another thing to ask yourself is if there is any way to save your marriage. If so, what would you like to see be different? In some cases, there is no real way to save a marriage, but if you're just unhappy or there is no serious cause for the divorce, you may want to see if there is something you can alter to make things work. For example, if you don't think your husband spends enough time with you, perhaps you can both join a new activity together or change your schedules at work.

Finally, make sure you're ready for the financial strain a divorce can cause. Even the most mentally prepared person may struggle to deal with the financial aspects of divorce. Talk to a financial adviser as well as your attorney to make sure you understand how much your divorce may cost you in the long term.
