Divorcing and new schools: Helping your child survive day one

When you got a divorce, you knew that one way or another, your child was going to have to go to a new school. Neither you nor his other parent could afford to live in the same area alone, so you both would have to move either way. Both of you spoke and decided on a school district, but your child isn't so sure.

What can you do to help your child get used to the idea of a new school? There are several tips that can help make sure he or she has a good first day and year with new friends in a new community.

The first thing to do is to make sure you stay positive about the changes. If your child believes you're anxious about the new school, it will only add to his or her frustration, anxiety or other concerns. As the first day approaches, talk to your child about what he or she expects, hopes will happen and worries about. This gives you a better idea of what to expect in the days to come while giving you a chance to provide reassurance.

Going to a new school is a team effort, so attempt to have your ex play a role in your child's first day as well. Perhaps you can drop your child off and meet up with him or her and his or her other parent after school for a recap of the day. Whatever you do, make sure your child knows that he or she has support from both of his parents.

Divorces change lives, but that doesn't always have to be bad. Our website has more on what you should think about if you're planning to divorce.
